What is the quality and accuracy of the information in CAMEO?
All the textual information in the database is obtained from published sources (articles, books, patents, MSDS, manufacturer spec sheets, etc.). Additionally, information is only entered into the database once it has been verified from more than one source. The new Authority Field provides a list of all sources that have been checked for the generation of that record. Notes are included for any discrepancies found among the various sources, particularly for numbers (e.g. development dates, physical parameters). The Authority Field also provides dates for the information sheets (MSDS, specs, etc.) that will aid in the interpretation of the data currency. Certainly there are some commercial products in the database with proprietary formulations that do not have specific content information.

What types of materials and terms are included in CAMEO?
Entries include all terms, materials and techniques used in the construction and/or conservation treatment of works of art. This includes but is not limited to: pigments, minerals, binders, coatings, adhesives, fibers, dyes, solvents, reagents, corrosion inhibitors, corrosion compounds, woods, pollutants, pest control agents, and storage materials. Can the analysis and characterization information in CAMEO be used as a standard?
While the analytical information in CAMEO may not meet the stringent requirements necessary to be a standard, it is assumed accurate and is provided for use as a reference resource. The technical information on the Full Material Record sheet, such as boiling point, hardness, solubility, autofluorescence, burn tests, microstructure, etc. has been obtained from published sources. The analysis images (charts, micrographs, spectra, chromatograms, etc.) were obtained from varying sources, both within the MFA as well as from other labs, and thus each may have been obtained under different conditions. CAMEO provides the user with the specific parameters used in the analysis (see notation field). The user can compare the conditions used for any image to their own methods of analysis.

Is the information in CAMEO updated periodically? How often?
The MFA is committed to the long-term maintenance of CAMEO. Monitoring the conservation literature to update citations and content of the database is handled on a continuing basis by the conservation staff. The ‘Last updated on’ field allows the user to determine when a record has been last modified. This date will let the user know about the currency of the information.

Will the information in CAMEO be released as a book or CD version?
There are no plans for publishing CAMEO in any other format than its online version. The Internet provides the optimum medium for adding, correcting, and updating materials and information as it becomes available. Additionally, the Internet provides immediate, easy access to a widely diverse, international audience.

How can I register to make changes and additions to the synonyms field?
Currently non-English terms are included in the synonym field as a search aid. As part of a collaborative agreement developed in 2006, EU-Artech members may register then directly access the synonyms fields to make corrections or additions in their native languages. To register, please use the CAMEO submit option. In addition to your name and email address, please include your professional affiliation and list the languages in which you are fluent.

I am having trouble finding records for common materials that should be in CAMEO such as – Acryloid B72
The problem may be in the spelling since many trademark names contain the trademark symbol or specific spaces or dashes, such as Acryloid® B-72. Since the database will automatically search on partial words, you may enter a simplified version of the search term such as ‘ACRYLOID’ . There is also the possibility that the term you are looking for has not yet been entered into the database. If you find this to be the case, please click the ‘Submit Info’ button to let us know. We will add a new record as soon as information is obtained.

May I copy text and images from the CAMEO site? Is CAMEO copyrighted?

You may print or download information from CAMEO for your personal, non-commercial use, provided the information is properly cited.
