Dyeing process The fabric was soaked into a dye bath of madder, mixed with Shikon root, and subsequently mordanted with ash water.
Uemera's notes A dyeing technique with madder is described in the "Shoku Nihongi (続日本紀)" (1177 AD) as "黒緋 (Kuroki-hi), 浅緋 (Asaki-hi)". The same color is named as "深緋 (Kokihi)" in the "Engishiki (延喜式)" (10th Century AD).
