Uemera's notes This color is what was called "Beni (紅)" in the Buyakuryo (賦役令), the 8th century AD, Japan. The plant was also read in Japanese classic poems in the Manyōshū (万葉集) from the 7th -8th century AD: 桃花褐の浅らの衣あきらかに念ひて妹にあはんものかも (volume 12); くれなゐの薄染衣浅らかに相思し人に戀ふる頃かも (volume 12); and くれなゐの濃染の衣色深く染めにしかばか忘れかねつる (volume 11).
