Uemera's notes This is the "檳榔" mentioned in the 肥前国風土記 (Hizen no kuni Fūdoki)」. Note that the nut of "檳榔 (Azimaki)" is said to be "蒲葵 (Birō)". The dyed sample was firstly mordanted with iron, then soaked into ash water, and finally again mordanted with iron. The deeper color of the right sample was achieved by repeating the process.
