Cadmium sulfide and cadmium sulfoselenide are intense colorants ranging in color from bright yellow to deep red. Cadmium sulfide was first synthesized in Germany in 1817 and later marketed as an artist pigment in the mid 19th century. Its use was not widespread, however, until about 1917.
