Description

A numbering system for yarn or fabric to provide an indication of the weight of a yarn or fabric. A higher number indicates a finer grade of yarn. For yarn, the count is called the yarn number. The base count of cotton is 840 yard to the pound. Thus, a No. 10 cotton has 10 times the base count or 8400 yards to the pounds. For fabric, the count indicates the number of warp and filling threads per inch of fabric, such as 80 x 96.
