Uemera's notes The dyed fabric was subsequently soaked into vinegar, which made the color clearer. In the Tōdaijikenmotsu-chō (東大寺献物帳) (inventory of objects donated by the Emperor Shōmu to the Tōdaiji-temple in the city of Nara) from 8th century AD, Japan, it is recorded that approximately 550 kg of this plant was donated: "大黄 九百九十一斤八兩 並袋 ". Jiō (地黄) (Rehmannia glutinosa (Gaertn.) Libosch. ex Fiscg. et C.A.Mey. f. glutinosa) would not be suitable for dyeing.
