Methods for the accurate dating of the origin of an artifact have great appeal. Several methods, starting with the use of radioactive decay techniques in 1896, have been developed and used with varying results. Some of these techniques are: radiocarbon dating, dendrochronology, obsidian hydration, thermoluminescence, lead isotope analysis, potassium-argon dating, and radiometric dating methods.
