Shown: A photomicrograph in ultraviolet light of a sample cross section from a table. (1) A thin lacquer layer or cover varnish (2) A thin lacquer layer and red pigment (possibly cinnabar) (3) A thin lacquer layer (4) A "yellow" layer (possibly yellow ochre and lacquer) (5) A "orange" mix of red and yellow (possibly yellow ochre and cinnabar and lacquer) (6) A "red" layer possibly cinnabar and lacquer (7) A "black" layer (possibly lacquer, bone ash and clay) (8) A "grey" with coarse particles which is probably a ground coating to smooth the substrate before final lacquer applications (possibly finely ground clay with animal glue).
