A respiratory disease transmitted to humans via rodents. Hantavirus can be deadly. It causes flu-like symptoms followed with liquid filled lungs. Mice do not appear ill while carrying the hantavirus, but shed infective particles into their urine, droppings, and saliva. The hantavirus enters the human body primarily through the mouth, nose, eyes, and broken skin. Symptoms can appear 1-6 weeks after exposure. It is treated with an antiviral drug.
