The copolymer has both covalent and ionic bonds. Ionomers crosslink to form a plastic that is resistant to abrasion, breaking, and chemicals. They are used for break-resistant bottles, vacuum packaging, protective equipment, insulation, sporting goods, and foamed sheets.
