Description
A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C 20 H 12, occurring as a brown solid With its discovery in 1912, a small group of red and violet synthetic organic vat dyes were developed. Perylene dyes has been laked as artist pigments since 1957 producing watercolor paints with good to excellent lightfastness. Perylene colors have also been used in automobile paints. In recent years, several perylene derivatives have been used as photoconducting compounds in optical LEDs and as a dye in spectroscopic studies. It and its derivatives may be carcinogenic, and are considered to be hazardous pollutants.
