The Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education (SCMRE) was established in 1963 to provide analysis and conservation support to the Smithsonian Museums.  Initially called the Conservation Analytical Laboratory (CAL), SCMRE  is focused on providing in-depth research and education in conservation, preservation, technical study, and analysis of museum collections.  Located near Washington DC, SCMRE is composed of over 30 staff members working in well-equipped conservation and scientific research labs.  They regularly sponsor training programs, produce educational materials, and publish research papers advancing the field of conservation.
