Museum number 288
Uemura number / title ; "Haze-some 25"
Folder location 4th shelf
Sample location left (288 L)
Fiber type silk
Color red
Dyestuff (Japanese common name) 蘇芳 : Suō
Dye (English common name) Brazilwood
Dyestuff (botanical name) Caesalpinia sappan L.
Plant part bark /dried (?)
Dyestuff extraction boiled in water
Auxiliary agent in dye bath -
Mordant alum (larger quantity)
Other auxiliary agent ash water
Uemura's notes In the dye bath, ash water was added first, and a small amount of alum was also added to fix the color compound(s) to the fabric. The addition of alum did not alter the color of the dye bath, but produced a better light fastness. The resultant colors would be different from those achieved by a dyeing technique with this plant from a later period where only alum was used as mordant.
