Uemera's notes The colors "呉桃染、黄黒染、杦染、皀染" were documented in the ”Shoku Nihongi (続日本紀)”, published in 1177 AD. The color "杦染" is thought to be a bluish black. It was difficult to achieve a deeper depth of shade.
