Description

A flat, even-texture, bobbin lace made in the French town of Valenciennes from about 1705 to 1780. Valenciennes lace was still made on a reduced scale after that time in other areas and is currently made in Ypres. Over 1000 bobbins may be used in Valenciennes lace to make both the pattern and the background from a single set of threads. From 1715, the lacemakers in Valenciennes only used a diamond shaped background. Similar style laces made earlier in the town and made in surrounding regions had square or circular background patterns. By 1830, the diamond pattern was replicated in machine-made laces.
