Description A reproductive printing method in which the engraved pattern is made with tiny dots. Used in the 16th century by Giulio Campagnola, the primary design dots in a stipple engraving are made with a roulette (small wheel with points) or a mattoir (mace head type tool). Other tools are used for the finer tonal areas, such as needles, curved stipple graver, or a stippling burin.
