Description A durable, twill weave fabric originally made from wool or worsted. Serge is now also made from cotton, acetate, rayon, silk, and blended fibers. It is woven with a 2-up 2-down twill pattern. Serge is used for dresses, suits, and coats. A coarse, heavyweight variety of serge is called storm serge, while French serge is lightweight with a fine, smooth texture.
