Any of several natural brown dyes that are extract from the heartwood and seed pods of the Acacia catechu (Bengal cutch), the fruits of Areca catechu (Bombay catechu) or the leaves and twigs of Uncaria gambir (gambier).
(See also dye records for cutch, and gambier.) Catechu dyes were extensively used for dyeing cottons. Aluminum mordants generally produced yellow-brown shades, tin mordants gave red-brown shades and iron mordants yielded dark brown colors.
