Description

A method for purifying water that uses either distillation or filtration to remove ions, minerals, and other contaminants. Distillation vaporizes and collects the pure water while leaving any salts, mineral and heavy organic compounds as residue. A deionization column is a two-stage process that first passes water through an ion exchange resin to replace any dissolved cations with hydrogen; the resultant acids are then adsorbed in a second column that contains an acid scavenger. Another type of filtration, called reverse osmosis, uses pressure to force the small water molecules through a membrane while trapping larger minerals and contaminants.
