Mordant alum

Uemura's notes In the dye bath, ash water was added first, and a small amount of alum was also added to fix the color compound(s) to the fabric. The addition of alum did not alter the color of the dye bath, but produced a better light fastness. The resultant colors would be different from those achieved by a dyeing technique with this plant from a later period where only alum was used as mordant. A larger amount of alum was used for the right sample.
