Artificial outdoor weathering

Description

A procedure similar to artificial aging that uses outdoor environments to induce deterioration rather than the controlled conditions of an indoor chamber. Outdoor weathering is generally an unacceptable method for comparing products used in art conservation because of the inability to control or even monitor all of the factors that influence the degradation process. It is used in industry, however, as automobile and commercial paint producers use exposure to Florida sunshine as a standard in their paint tests. Because the kinetics of the outdoor exposure test may differ from natural aging kinetics, the term artificial weathering is often preferred over the term accelerated weathering.
