A family of flowering plants of the family Coptis native to Asia and North America.  The roots of the plants contain significant amounts of the yellow olorant 'berberine'.  It can easily be extracted to produce a bright yellow dye that fluoresces brightly in ultraviolet light.

Description

A family of flowering plants of the family Coptis native to Asia and North America. The roots of the plants contain significant amounts of the yellow olorant 'berberine'. It can easily be extracted to produce a bright yellow dye that fluoresces brightly in ultraviolet light.
