Description

Powdered lime (calcium oxide) or limestone (calcium carbonate) that is added to pig iron when it is smelted. The lime or limestone fuses with silica and alumina impurities producing a slag which floats to the top of the molten metal. The slag is readily removed leaving a purer, stronger iron behind.
