Colorless or pale yellow, oily liquid. Tricresyl phosphate is used as a solvent and plasticizer in [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=polyvinyl%20chloride polyvinyl chloride], [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=cellulose%20nitrate cellulose nitrate], [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=mastic mastic] and some commercial lacquer formulations. It is also used industrially as a flame retardant, a [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=lead lead] [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=scavenger scavenger] in [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=gasoline gasoline], and a waterproofing agent.

Flame resistant but decomposes with heat to produce toxic fumes.
