Description
A stiff, coarse, open-weave fabric used to supported the weave or tufting of a carpet. Early carpet backings were made from cordage type fibers such as jute, hemp, or sisal. Some carpet backings were coated with rubber or latex after weaving. Modern machine made carpets are woven onto synthetic backing fabrics, such as nylon and polypropylene.
