Dyestuff (Japanese common name) 梻 : Shikimi
Dyestuff (English common name) Aniseed tree
Dyestuff (botanical name) Illicium anisatum L.

Dyestuff extraction boiled in water
Auxiliary agent in dye bath -
Mordant -
Other auxiliary agent ash water
Dyeing process The temperature of the dye bath was kept in warm.
Uemura's notes When dyed in a cold bath, the resultant color would be yellow, not red tone. Without adding ash water, the resultant color would be a pale yellow tone, which is not satisfactory. Use of its leaves for dyeing would also achive the same results. The dyeing technique was known to be used for " (Tamba-cloth)" (the dyed color of the Tamba-cloth is generally in more brown tone).
