Description

A clear, sweet smelling organic ester used a solvent, perfume, and general reagent in various transesterification reactions. Propyl propionate has been considered as a safer substitute for toluene, however there is little to no information available on its long term affects on humans.

Synonyms and Related Terms

Propyl propanoate (IUPAC); propanoic acid, propyl ester;

Applications

  • Evaporates faster than xylene
  • Appears to be an effective carrier for Paraloid B72

Risks

  • Highly flammable with a low flash point (-19C).
  • Overexposure can cause skin, eye, nose and throat irritation, headache and dizziness.
  • Vapors can be toxic
  • Ingestion causes vomiting.
  • ThermoFisher: SDS
