Description
An analytical method for the separation and detection of anions or cations. Ion chromatography uses ion-exchange resins to exchange either hydrogen or hydroxyl ions to the existing anions and cations in the sample. For example, in the analysis of a salt solution for anions, the sample will be passed through a cation exchange column and the cations will be replaced by hydrogen ions. Thus, both potassium chloride and sodium chloride will be converted to hydrogen chloride and eluted as a single chloride peak. The exchange resins must be flushed or regenerated periodically to restore their capacity of hydrogen or hydroxyl ions.
