Description

Originally, scarlet lake was prepared from cochineal. Since the late 19th century, scarlet lake has been made with synthetic red colorants, such as an Azo dye, precipitated on Barium sulfate. Scarlet red is not used as an artist pigment because it is fugitive and may bleed in oil.
