Folium locations and spectra from Aceto et al. Direct article
Description
A natural blue plant dye extracted from the fruits of the Chrozophora tinctoria plant, native in Portugal. Folium was used in medieval Europe for illuminations in books, dyeing cloth and to color the rind of cheese. Its method of preparation as well as its medicinal and dyeing properties was lost in the 19th century. A team of Portuguese researchers used clues from ancient texts to rediscover the recipe. The researchers used a 15th-century guide for making paints for illuminating manuscripts. They also used modern techniques to analyze the dye and identify its chemical structure.
The term has also been used for other dyestuffs, such as red mulberry and turnsole.
