Description
A protective finish composed of a natural resin dissolved in alcohol. Spirit of wine varnish was used in the 18th century as a fast drying finish. Recipes often used a mixture of resins such as sandarac, spermaceti, elemi, and mastic. The finish was used for varnising gilt leather and picture frames. See spirit varnish.
