Well-formed gypsum particle, XPL, 400X. Sample collected from brownish residues in an apothecary jar in the Colonial Williamsburg Collection (CWF 1947-177). Note the 'swallowtail' shape and low birefringence showing first order gray colors. Extinction was inclined. Examined with a Nikon NiU upright polarizing light microscope, image captured with DSRi1 Pixel-shifting camera and Nikon Elements Basic Research software. Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Materials Analysis Laboratory.
