Description
A wooden object coated with numerous layers of Oriental lacquer. The thick hard coating often is prepared with alternating color layers and then is carved into a decorative pattern. The individual layers contain inorganic fillers and brightly colored pigments. Lacquerware, used for furniture and dishes, was simulated in many European workshops with a process known as japanning.
