Description

A testing method used to compare the ability of paper to withstand repeated folding. Instruments, such as the Folding Tester and the Fold Testing Machine are available for mechanically folding a strip of pager forward and backward at the same position until breakage occurs. Results are given in the number of cycles (front and back) completed before failure. Results vary radically with changes in relative humidity, as paper is more brittle at low relative humidities. The folding endurance of papers has been used as an indicator of aging and deterioration (Roberts and Etherington 1982).
