Description

A yellow liquid with a strong sulfur dioxide odor. Calcium bisulfite is only known in solution. It is prepared by saturating calcium carbonate with sulfurous acid or by bubbling sulfur dioxide through a calcium hydroxide solution. Calcium hydrogen sulfite is used in the manufacturing of paper pulp to dissolve lignin and as a scavenger for chlorine. It is also used as a bleach, preservative, and disinfectant.
