Description

A fibrous protein that acts as a binder in the iridescent mother-of-pearl layer on some marine invertebrate shells (mollusks, abalone, snails, etc.). Conchiolin binds the aragonite (calcium carbonate) to form a rigid structure. It also forms the hard, brown, horny substance on the outer shells, such as the snail shell.
