Description
The evolution of gases from a solid material. The gases may be due to the volatilization of solvents, plasticizers, or small organic compounds inherent in the solid. For example, oak will slowly emit organic acids as it ages, while some plywoods offgas formaldehyde. Other gases may be produced as a paint dries, an adhesive cures, or a material degrades.
