Description

A method used to date obsidian artifacts. Obsidian dating measures the thickness of the hydration layer on chipped surfaces. The hydration layer indicates the approximate length of time that the surface has been exposed to water vapor. Obsidian dating has been used to determine ages in the range of 200 to 200,000 years.
