Description

A decorative lacquer technique whose designs are created with embedded gold and silver particles. Makie techniques have been used since the 8th century in Japan. Patterns range from cloudlike patterns to full images. Specific makie techniques include:

  • nashiji: pear skin
  • ikakeji: poured ground
  • hiramakie: unpolished
  • togidashi: polished out
  • takamakie: relief sprinkled picture
