Spirit of wine varnish

Description

A protective finish composed of a resin natural resin dissolved in alcohol. Spirit of wine varnish was used in the 18th century as a fast drying finish. Recipes often used a mixture of resins such as sandarac, spermaceti, elemi, and resin mastic. The finish was used for varnising gilt leather and picture frames. See varnish spirit varnish.
