Description

1) A brand name for a synthetic tanning agent. Orotan is a dark red, viscous solution composed of a sulfonated phenol formaldehyde (31%). It simulates the tanning properties of vegetable tannins. Orotan produces a strong, full, solid leather that is often used for shoes. This syntan is also used as a bleaching and penetrating agent in combination with other tannins.

2) [Rohm & Haas] A brand name for a dispersant composed of the sodium salt of a carboxylated polyelectrolyte.
