Uemera's notes The fabric was firstly dyed with turmeric, and then top-dyed with safflower. One of dyeing techniques used after the Tempyo period (729 -749 AD) in Japan. During the Fujiwara period (894 -1285 AD), the Benihi (紅緋) and Hi (緋) had been still considered as different colors. Later, the Hi became considered as a type of the Benihi.
