Uemera's notes The dyeing process was same as that with acorns of oak tree. The left sample was dyed deeper than the right one. This plant was mentioned in the Keikou-tennō-ki (景行天皇紀) : しらかしがえをうずにさせこのこ; and also in the Makuranosōshi (枕草子), from the Heian period, Japan: しらかしなどいふもの、ましてみやま木の中にも、いとけどほくて、三位、二位のうへのきぬそむるをりばかりぞ、葉をだに人の見るめる
