Uemera's notes This is what was called "Ai (藍)" in the Izumo Fūdoki (出雲風土記), an ancient record of the culture and geography of the Izmo region, Japan, from 733 AD. What was called as Asaki-hanada (浅縹) and Hanada (縹) in ancient Japan is an indigo dyed light blue; and Koki-hanada (深縹) is indigo dyed deep blue.
