Uemera's notes | Mordanting with ash water would not fix the color compound(s) well to fiber. The resultant color would be yellow brown like Shiba-zome, using iron mordant bath and ash water bath. This plant is not a type of mulberry tree. The Bencao Gangmu, a Chinese medical book (本草綱目accessible through: http://www.i-apple.jp/honzo/) from the late 16th century AD says: 其木染黄赤色、謂之柘黄、天子所服云々 |
