Description
An unstandardized name that is normally used for sodium carbonate (washing soda). The term soda was originally used for sodium monoxide (Na2O). Sodium monoxide reacts violently in water to form sodium hydroxide, i.e., caustic soda. When combined with other terms, the word soda refers to the element sodium, as in carbonate of soda.
