Description
A red dye produced from the Chinese sugar cane plant, Sorghum saccharatum which is native to Asia and has been cultivated in Europe since 1853 for sugar production. The fermented juice from the plant stems produces a reddish-brown colorant which can be precipitated with sulfuric acid to form a bright red powder. Sorgho red can be mordanted to silk and wool with tin. This dye was used in China to produce a color similar to Turkey red.
