Years after years, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France has developped techniques dedicated to his primary mission of book conservation. To the traditional curative conservation and bookbinding activities, new activities were added concerning preventive conservation, training of personal, digitisation and research. The BNF Technical Centre permits a true scientific approach due to development of analytical techniques, studies of material aging and alteration conditions.
The Centre consists in two different sections:
Microbiology & environment
Mcrobiological analysis of contaminated books
Sanitary expertise of storage rooms, and also gifts and bequests
Insects identification
Indoor climate monitoring
Ethylen oxide desinfection
Chemistry
Chemical analysis of the materials and their alteration products
Mechanical tests
Aging tests (light, temperature, relative humidity)
