Broomroot

Description

A stiff fiber obtained from the root of a brush grass (Epicampes macroura or Muhlenbergia macroura) native to deforested areas of Mexico. Broomroot is prepared by grinding the grass roots with stones and water. The pale yellow fibers are used for brooms and brushes. They become dark yellow and brittle with age. Similar fibers are obtained from the roots of other grasses: Sorghum rigidifolium, Andropogon gryllas, Vetiveria ziganiodes, Chrysopogon gryllus, Aristida setacea.
